Embark on a journey through time as you explore the Ionian Islands. Their strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea has attracted civilizations throughout history, leaving behind a fascinating tapestry of influences. The islands’ strategic location made them a favourite prize for the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, French, and British to vie for control over the centuries.

Inhabited by Greeks since ancient times, these islands have also been the subject of Homer’s epics with Ithaca, the legendary home of Odysseus.

The Ionian Islands were the centre of a strategic war between empires in the Middle Ages. From the 14th to the 18th centuries, the most significant traces of Venetian rule can be seen in the architecture of Corfu, with its imposing castles and elegant buildings. The Liston Promenade and the Old Fortress of Corfu are just the most popular places where you can witness the unique architecture of Venice. The traces of Venetian rule can also be seen in the island’s cuisine and even its music.

The monasteries and churches scattered throughout the islands are traces of the Byzantine period. In some areas, the British protectorate of the islands in the 19th century is reflected in the cricket pitches and afternoon tea traditions.

The desire for union with Greece culminated in the formal annexation in 1864.  Traces of this complex history are woven into the cultural fabric of each island, offering a glimpse into their fascinating past.

My Ionian Adventure: Experiences and Recommendations from Kefalonia

My Kefalonia experience was pure magic. When I arrived in Argostoli, the charming capital with its colourful harbour, I knew I had discovered a particular corner of the Ionian Islands. The true perfection of the island for me was Myrtos Beach, with its translucent turquoise water lapping against a shore of smooth, white pebbles.

If you want a holiday full of adventure and discovery, hire a kayak and explore the hidden coves that dot the coastline. You can also go hiking in Mount Ainos National Park, which offers challenging hikes and spectacular panoramic views. It is said that these hiking trails are home to wildflowers in spring, but I missed the perfect spring weather as I went in the summer. The Mediterranean climate is best enjoyed from May to October.

You should definitely visit Melissani and Drogarati caves, where sunlight filters through the cracks in the earth and illuminates it with an ethereal glow.

Remember to wear comfortable shoes on this adventure; you will walk a lot while exploring the islands. Be sure to take sun protection products such as sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses with you. Having cash will also be useful; credit cards may not be accepted everywhere.

If you are planning a trip, rent a car and enjoy the various landscapes of the island. Kefalonia is an island that will leave you relaxed, inspired, and planning your return journey.
